It started with a dog who kept getting out
Our beagle, Talon, could open a side gate with his nose. The tag he wore was a stamped aluminum disc from a mall kiosk, and after six months the phone number had rubbed down to a smudge. He was returned by a stranger who guessed at the last two digits.
So we bought a secondhand fiber laser, took over half a garage on East 2nd Street, and started cutting tags thick enough and deep enough to still be readable years later.
A tag only has one job: be readable by a stranger, in a hurry, in bad light.
Five years on we are still on East 2nd Street — just with a proper storefront, two engravers, and a rescue program that tags every adopted pet at 1,200 partner shelters for free.
